The Homeplace

In the 1800's kitchens were detached from the house.

This kept the heat separate from the main quarters during the summer months.  We were fortunate to visit  a working farm museum near Dover, Tennessee a couple of years ago. It was beneficial to my research for A Twist of Tobacco to see how the common people really lived before and during the Civil War.
